Dear Council Delegates and Executive Committee Members (copy Correspondents)
Subject: Task Force on Mortality
At its meeting in October in Dublin, Council approved the formation of a Task Force on Mortality, reporting to the Executive Committee. The terms of reference of the Task Force are:
- To conduct a study of current data collection efforts internationally and to create guidelines to ensure that appropriate data is available.
- To coordinate the work done by different Sections and Committees of the IAA in the area of mortality, especially when this involves cooperation with other international bodies.
- To conduct a survey of current international research on mortality to determine future needs in this area and begin to facilitate a process to enhance future efforts of actuaries in this area.
- To propose how actuaries could take a leading role in international research on mortality by acting as the initiator and coordinator of such research.
The recommended Chairperson for the Task Force is Martin Stevenson of Australia and the Co Vice Chairpersons are Henk van Broekhoven of The Netherlands and William Horbatt of the United States; their appointment is currently going through a Council electronic vote that will end on January 29. The Task Force membership will comprise committee and association representation; if your association or committee would like to be represented on this Task Force, please send the name of your representative to the Secretariat (secretariat@actuaries.org).
As an initial step, the Task Force is requesting details of mortality studies undertaken by associations, or by members of associations or of any well-known mortality studies undertaken by non-actuaries in your country. The ideal form of the information would be links to the studies, or soft copies.
The Task Force is interested in all forms of mortality studies, including:
- . mortality tables with expected use by practitioners, including both the smoothed tables and the underlying experience analysis (such as the UK Actuarial profession’s CMI);
- . research with respect to mortality development and likely future trends;
- . other studies such as extreme events (pandemics); likely extent of volatility, etc.
The information should be emailed to martin.stevenson@mercer.com with copies to henk.v.broekhoven@ing.com and horbatt@actuarialconsortium.com.
To enable the Task Force to make a meaningful contribution at the IAA Council and Committee meetings in June, it is requested that you provide the information by February 18, 2008.
The study of mortality is one of the cornerstones of the actuarial profession. Moreover at the current time, mortality issues have never been more prominent: with improvements in mortality placing strains on all forms of retirement income systems around the world; with mortality assumptions being a core part of Solvency II; and with the need for products to be developed to protect individuals against longevity risk.
We look forward to your support for this most important IAA initiative.
